Fasting during Ramadan involves abstaining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset for a month, which in 2019 is from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm. Many also choose to spend their evening in prayer at the mosques from late evening to 1am, followed by a pre-fasting meal at 2am before praying once more and then sleeping around 3am. Sleep deprivation therefore impacts on the fasting person possibly more so than the hunger and thirst.

A rogue employee is someone who has stopped complying with the company policies and is behaving in an unscrupulous manner not amenable to the company’s reputation. This often occurs when an employee is faced with professional or personal struggle making it easier to lose the sense of propriety. The employee might start abandoning their tasks and responsibilities, and in the worst-case scenario they work to undermine the business by committing fraudulent activities like stealing assets and/or sensitive company information for monetary gains or by sharing sensitive business data with a competitor.

Uber Drivers Are Workers, NOT Independent Contractors

The Court of Appeal has upheld, by a majority, both the EAT’s and ET’s decisions that two Uber drivers are workers. The drivers brought test cases against the company and as workers are therefore entitled to holiday pay and to be paid at least the National Minimum Wage while working. However, this is not the final word as it is reported that Uber has been granted permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Good Work Plan sets out the actions the Government intends to take in response to the four employment-related consultations it launched in February 2018. The consultations sought views on whether and how the Government should implement certain recommendations made by the independent Taylor Review back in July 2017, namely those relating to employment status, increasing transparency for workers, agency workers and employment rights enforcement.
