What is HR?

A frequent reaction I see from business people when I say I’m a HR Consultant is ‘of course I don’t need HR – I only employ a small number of people.’

My answer to that is every business will only ever perform as well as the people it employs, whether that be 1 or 1000, as they are the face and voice of your business through their contact with your customers and suppliers.

Generally businesses are established by someone with a passion for something and as the business owner you will set high expectations for yourself and your business. At some point you realise you are no longer successfully juggling all the balls and you take the giant leap in to the unknown and recruit your first employee. All goes well and your vision for the company and those high expectations you’ve set yourself are past on to the new recruit. You continue to expand and recruit more employees into the team. Then your clear message and vision hits a game of chinese whispers and comes out the other side looking and sounding totally wrong. That diluted message reaches your customers and suppliers and they start wondering what’s going on and stop singing your praises!

So, how do you ensure that, no matter how large your team becomes, each and every member of it is shouting your message out load and clear?

First and foremost you need to ensure that each employee is happy in what they are doing and where they are doing it. Why? Because a happy employee will be productive, innovative and above all loyal.

What are the benefits of introducing HR into your business?

  • Improved recruitment processes: finding the right employees, for the right roles, at the right time
  • Improved communication: employees understand expectations and company goals and provide constructive feedback
  • Improved performance: through proactive management of poor performance issues
  • Improved levels of absence: through improved monitoring of absence and supporting managers to take appropriate action when required
  • Increased productivity: employees will possess, or be working towards, the competencies they need to succeed
  • Motivated employees: investing time and resources in to performance management, training and development, and coaching motivates individuals which leads to greater staff retention.
  • Stable workforce: recruiting and training new employees is a time consuming exercise which you don’t want to be repeating too often.
